You know that sinking feeling, don’t you?
You spend hours carefully crafting a post - tailored for that one specific audience you’ve worked so hard to define. You’ve got their pain points written out, their goals mapped, their personality pinned down. You hit publish and wait, convinced this one’s going to land.
And then…
Tumbleweed.
Silence.
Maybe a polite thumbs-up from your mum.
Meanwhile, the exact people you really wanted to reach? They scroll straight past.
So here’s a little thought that might shift things:
Have you tried engaging with them first?
As speakers, we’re used to being on stage - the spotlight’s on us, the mic is in our hand, and the audience is (hopefully) hanging on every word. But social media doesn’t work quite the same way.
It’s not just about showing up with brilliant insights and waiting for applause. It’s more like a conversation in the corridor after the talk - messy, two-way, human.
And if you’re not already in the conversation? Chances are, your posts won’t magically pull people in.
Think about the people you most want to notice your posts. Are you showing up in their world?
Because here’s the truth: the more you engage with others, the more likely they are to engage with you. Not in a “scratch my back” transactional way, but in the natural way humans pay attention to those who pay attention to them.
Here’s a real example. Every Monday I wake up to about 30 new emails. Most of them are newsletters, many of them well written. But let’s be honest - I don’t read them all.
The ones I do read? They’re from people I’m already connected with elsewhere. We’ve chatted. We’ve swapped comments. There’s a sense of familiarity and camaraderie. And because of that, I care what they have to say.
See the pattern? Visibility follows relationship.
One of my all-time favourite reads is How to Win Friends and Influence People. The principle is timeless: be genuinely interested in others, and they’ll be far more interested in you.
Social media is no different. The speakers who thrive online aren’t necessarily the loudest or most polished - they’re the ones who make a habit of supporting, noticing, and cheering others on.
So let me ask you: who do you really wish was interacting with your content?
Now flip it. How can you show up for them this week - before you ask them to show up for you?
Because that’s how real engagement begins.
