Because whether you’re organising a conference, booking your first-ever keynote, or trying to stretch a tight budget for an internal team day, the question almost always comes up:
It’s a fair question. A necessary one. And yet, it’s one that still feels strangely awkward to ask. We don’t like talking about fees — especially in the UK, where our default is: “just send over your rates and we’ll go from there.”
But the truth is, until you understand what goes into those fees — and what you’re really getting for your money — it’s hard to make a confident decision.
So let’s break it down, properly.
But speaker fees really do vary wildly — from under £500 to over £20,000 — and the range isn’t random. It’s shaped by factors like:
Let’s Put Some Numbers to It
Here’s a very rough guide, based on UK market norms:
I usually sit somewhere in the £2,500–£5,000 range, depending on the session, the prep involved, and how much support you’d like around the main talk.
But here’s the key: if you’re just looking at the fee without considering what’s included, you're not comparing like with like.
This is where things get interesting. Because while it might look like you’re paying for 45 minutes of speaking time, what you’re actually buying includes:
1. Preparation and Customisation
Most good speakers don’t just rock up and deliver the same thing on loop. They:
Research your company, industry and audience
Tailor stories and messaging to fit your theme or goals
Rehearse and adjust tone, timing, and delivery
Often rewrite large chunks of material to suit the specific room
It’s not a performance, it’s a collaboration. That’s part of the value.
2. Travel and Time
If your event is in another city (or country), there’s often:
A full day of travel either side
Overnight stays
Lost time for other work or family
Even local gigs can take up most of a day when you factor in travel, tech checks, and event flow.
3. Presence and Professionalism
When you book someone experienced, you’re paying for peace of mind.
They show up on time
They adjust to shifting agendas
They handle awkward tech fails or sleepy audiences with grace
They help make your event feel smoother, calmer, more polished
That reliability? That calm presence? That’s part of the price.
4. Post-Talk Engagement
Some speakers vanish as soon as they step off stage. Others (like me) stick around for:
Q&As
Informal chats and networking
Breakout sessions or panels
Post-event resources or support
Often, clients say the real impact came from those quieter, off-stage moments.
This is a great question, and the honest answer is: not always.
Because most of the work — the real labour — isn’t about how long I speak on stage. It’s everything around it: prep, travel, headspace, emotional energy, availability. So even if the talk is 20 minutes instead of 60, the fee doesn’t usually drop by two-thirds.
It’s not about charging per minute — it’s about the value delivered across the experience.
That said, I’m always open to creative ways to make it work. Which leads us to…
Please ask. Don’t be afraid.
If you’re a smaller organisation, I’ll always do what I can to be flexible. Sometimes that means:
Adjusting the format (e.g. a virtual session instead of in-person)
Combining with other work (e.g. if I’m already in your area)
Doing a shorter engagement with limited prep
Offering a payment plan or custom package
I’d much rather have an open conversation than lose the chance to contribute something valuable.
Here’s how I see it:
You’re not just paying for a speaker. You’re investing in the experience your people will have. The stories they’ll remember. The spark that makes them reflect, re-engage, take action.
So how much does a speaker cost?
Enough to reflect the time, effort and experience behind the scenes — and hopefully not so much that it stops the right message from reaching your people.
But more importantly: the right speaker will help you feel like it was money well spent.
If you're still unsure? Ask. Tell me your budget. Let’s chat about what’s possible.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not about the price. It’s about the impact. And I'd love to work with you.
